In this paper, we evaluate three different UV absorbers. They have advantages and related characteristics. First, let's introduce the UV absorber:
Omnistab UV 1577 TF is a toluene-free hydroxyphenyltriazine UV absorber. Has very low volatility and good compatibility with a variety of polymers. It provides polycarbonate and polyester with higher weather resistance than conventional benzotriazole-based UV absorbers.
Omnistab UV 3030 is a very low volatility cyanoacrylate based ultraviolet absorber (UVA) that imparts excellent photostability to engineered polymers. With maximum thermal stability, no inherent color. It can be used to stabilize highly transparent polymers with high extrusion temperatures.
Omnistab UV 3638 provides very strong and broad UV absorption with no color contribution. Offers low volatility. Gives high UV shielding efficiency.
Omnistab UV 1577TF
This is a hydroxybenzotriazine UV absorber. Furthermore, it is active in both UV-B and UV-A regions. It shows very good results in PET light stabilization. UV 1577 TF is recommended for PC but not as recommended as UV 3030 as blooming and buildup are sometimes observed during the production of PC clear sheets. It can also be used for light stabilization of ABS plastics and other engineering plastics. Most importantly, it is more effective than hydroxytriazole-based UV absorbers such as Omnistab UV 329. Recommended for 20-year stability PET sheet. Not as good as the Omnistab UV 1600 (which is currently in development). For example, higher concentrations are required to achieve the same photostability.
Omnistab UV 3030
This is a cyanoacrylate type UV absorber that is mainly effective in the UV-B region. Very effective for stabilization of polycarbonate (PC). It is stable at the processing temperature of PC (about 300C) without blooming and build-up on tool equipment. Also, it can be recommended for 20 years of PC in outdoor conditions together with the Omnistab UV 1600.
Omnistab UV 3638
This is a benzoxazine type UV absorber with strong absorption in the UV-A region and less absorption in the UV-B region. Effective for light stabilization of PET. However, the extent is lower than UV 1577. It has high thermal stability. Available for different engineering polymers. In conclusion, for less durable products, we recommend the Omnistab UV 3638. For example, for 10 years).
