UV Absorbers for Broad Wavelength Spectrum

In this article, we will explain in detail the UV absorbers used in the broad wavelength spectrum. According to the different wavelengths, ultraviolet light can be divided into three bands. UV A (400-315nm), UV B (315-280nm) and UV C (280-180nm).


From three different bands, some parts of UV C and UV B never reach Earth. When sunlight passes through the atmosphere, it is absorbed by ozone, water vapor, oxygen and carbon dioxide. However, when our products are exposed to sunlight, UV A rays and some UV B can have a significant impact on the life cycle of our products.


What is a UV absorber?

As the name suggests, the most common form of UV radiation protection is the addition of UV absorbers. They absorb UV light and transmit energy. Furthermore, they release or dissipate energy in the form of heat or harmless low-energy radiation.


Ultraviolet (UV) absorbers work to protect the interior of plastic parts from harmful UV radiation. These products are characterized by very strong UV absorption and a high degree of inherent photostability.


According to different chemical structures, UV absorbers are classified into salicylates, benzophenones, benzotriazoles and triazines. The application and development of salicylate is earlier, but it is easy to sublime under strong light irradiation, and the product is easy to turn yellow.


In short, it is rarely used at the moment. As an alternative, triazine-based ultraviolet absorbers have been newly developed in recent years.


Compared with benzopyrone and benzotriazole UV absorbers, it has better photostability, less surface migration, high absorption performance, broad spectrum, low volatility and good dispersibility, and has been used in different industries. get applied. Such as plastics, coatings, cosmetics and other industries.


Combinations of hindered amine light stabilizers and UV absorbers generally exhibit synergistic performance over either light stabilizer alone. v


Omnistab UV 1577

Omnistab UV 1577 is a hydroxyphenyl triazine UV absorber. One is the advantage of extremely low volatility, and the other is good compatibility with a variety of polymers. UV 1577 hardly absorbs visible light above 400nm. Most importantly, the yellowish color has no effect on the final application. That's why it's especially interesting for transparent or light-colored materials that don't have color issues.


It has excellent processing stability due to its high molecular weight. Compared with benzotriazole UV absorbers, triazines have stronger UV absorption properties in the full range of 300-380 nm. For example UV 1577 works well in polycarbonate and polyester applications. Other applications are polymer blends or flame retardant compounds due to their excellent compatibility.


Omnistab UV 1577 has a strong absorption of light in the UV-A and UV-B (280-400nm) range. In addition, better UV radiation absorption properties are exhibited.


Thereby, the damage of polymer products under ultraviolet radiation is greatly reduced, and the service life of polymer products is effectively prolonged. A UV absorber (Omnistab UV 1577) can be used synergistically in combination with polymeric or phosphite antioxidants.
