octocrylene: what is it

octocrylene is an organic sunscreen. This filter mainly absorbs UVB radiation, which not only causes tanning, but also sunburn and skin cancer.

In our product it appears in the ingredients list on the pack under the name OCTOCRYLENE.

Why use it?

Octocrylene protects the skin from the harmful effects of the sun and premature skin aging. It helps prevent the risk of skin cancer.

This filter primarily absorbs UVB rays and shorter UVA rays, which are responsible for aging and skin cancer.

Octocrylene is stable in sunlight and therefore effective. It stabilizes avobenzone, a particularly effective filter of long-wave UVA rays, allowing it to be used.

It makes sunscreen products water resistant.

Why is it being questioned?

Octocrylene has been questioned because of its potential for sensitization. This ingredient is also suspected of being an endocrine disruptor. Finally, the research calls into question its environmental impact, especially on corals. It is also not very biodegradable.

fact:

The use of octocrylene alone does not cause photosensitivity, and allergies to this ingredient in sunscreen products are extremely rare. Some cases of hypersensitivity from exposure to sunlight (photosensitivity) and transient skin irritation have been observed at high concentrations of octocrylene.

According to the European Commission (CSSC), octocrylene is neither considered a photoallergen nor an allergen.

It is not an endocrine disruptor as defined by the World Health Organization, whose role is to lead and coordinate global health within the United Nations.

The use and concentration of octocrylene in our sunscreen products is strictly controlled to avoid any potential impact on the aquatic environment.

At concentrations used in sunscreen products, or measured in aquatic environments, octocrylene did not cause any adverse effects on corals.

How is it used in our products?

We use octocrylene in concentrations authorized by the various current regulations in the cosmetic industry. We optimize the concentration of this filter based on the other filters it is combined with, the target sun protection, the sensory desired and the product's intended goals. Octocrylene is necessary to stabilize avobenzone: their combined use ensures optimal performance (UVA + UVB coverage). Where possible, we use filters that are more environmentally friendly than octocrylene in our formulations.

We have developed a scientific testing platform that allows us to accurately measure and continually improve the environmental profile of our sunscreen formulations containing this and other filters.

Like all of our products, products containing octocrylene have undergone systematic and rigorous evaluation to assess their quality and safety for humans and their impact on the environment. This is the fundamental principle that applies to all our products around the world.
